  2.  An Example of the Hammer Rite Ritual
  3.  as adapted by Grendel and unknown others

  9.  VE: Ritual workspace or area. This can be a permanent room or a tempory
  10.      space.
  11.  
  12.  GALDER: A magical invocation or mantra.
  13.  
  14.  STADHA: Bodily postures which imitate the shapes of runestaves used in
  15.          GALDER.
  16.  
  17.  VITKI:  A runic magician
  18.  
  19.  In important ritual work the vitki may wish to recite an invocatory
  20. GALDER into which the hammer rite may be incorporated.  Such a GALDER
  21. would serve to invoke divine forces or simply act as a general
  22. invocation to the runic powers, or both.  The knowledgeable vitki will
  23. compose his or her own rite and GALDER, for this would be a great deed
  24. of runecraft!  Note how the hammer rite is interwoven into this example:
  25.  
  26.  1.  Standing in the middle of the VE, face north, in the STADHA and
  27. intone:
  28.  
  29.      Fare now forth
  30.      mighty Fimbultyr  "The Awesome God"
  31.      from heavenly homes all eight
  32.      Sleipnir be saddled,
  33.      hither swiftly to ride:
  34.      Galdrsfadhir, "The Father of Incantation" might to give and gain.
  35.      Holy rune-might flow
  36.      from the hoves of Hangatyr's, "The God of the Hanged", steed;
  37.      in streams of steadfast strength -
  38.      through staves of stalwart standing!

  40.  2.  Go to the northern rim of the VE and with the wand trace the circle
  41. in the direction of the sun, from left to right.
  42.  
  43. During this process sing:
  44.  
  45.      The rune-might is drawn
  46.      'round the holy-stead,
  47.      unwanted wights wend away!
  48.  
  49.  3.  When the circle is complete return to the center and facing the
  50. original direction, perform the rune-ring portion of the hammer rite.
  51.  
  52.      THE HAMMER RITE
  53.  
  54.      This example is written in a northward orientation, and appropriate
  55. changes of course should be made in the order of GALDER in rites of an
  56. eastward orientation.
  57.  
  58.  a)  With the rune wand in the right hand, face the North.
  59.  
  60.  b)  Beginning with FEHU in the north, trace and send the runes of the
  61. futhark in a ring around you at the level of the solar plexus as far out
  62. as the circle on the ground or floor, always "with the sun" in a
  63. clockwise direction.  The ring of runes should form a complete band
  64. ending with OTHALA next to FEHU in the north after the circle has been
  65. gone completely around. The runes should be visualized as glowing, red
  66. characters floating about three or four feet in the air.

  68.  c)  Stand in the cross STADHA (arms straight out from the body) and
  69. visualize an equilateral cross lying horizontally in the plane of the
  70. rune ring and your solar plexus, with that point as the center of the
  71. cross.  The arms of this cross should end at the points where they
  72. intersect the rune band at each of the cardinal points.  Imagine a
  73. surrounding sphere of shimmering blue light with the red rune band as
  74. its equator. Then visualize a vertical axis coming down through your
  75. head into your body from the infinite space above and up from the
  76. infinite space below through your feet.
  77.  
  78.  d)  Feel and see the force flowing into your centre from all six
  79. directions (north, east, south, west, up, and down) as it builds a
  80. sphere of glowing red might.  The colour may be altered depending on the
  81. ritual intention.
  82.  
  83.  When this is complete say:
  84.  
  85.      The worrisome wights
  86.      now wend their way
  87.      eastward toward etin-home;
  88.      hallowed be the hall of Hroptatyr, "The God of Hidden Things"
  89.      with the help of Hrungnir's slayer! "Thorr"
  90.  
  91.  4.  Now perform the rest of the hammer rite.
  92.  
  93.  e)  Facing north, the vitki should touch the lower part of the wand to
  94. the breast at the solar plexus, the center of power, and thrust it
  95. forward, projecting the force from that center to a point on the inside
  96. face of the outer sphere. Trace the Hammer of Thor with your dominant
  97. hand using the wand and draw from the might that has been accumulated in
  98. the sphere around you as follows (starting with the w and following the
  99. letters in normal order):

  111. During this process intone:
  112.  
  113.      Hammer in the North hallow and hold this holy-stead!
  114.  
  115.  Then, turning 90 degrees to the right, send and sign another hammer
  116. sign in the same manner vibrating:
  117.  
  118.      Hammer in the East hallow and hold this holy-stead!
  119.  
  120.  In the South:
  121.  
  122.      Hammer in the South hallow and hold this holy-stead!
  123.  
  124.  And in the West:
  125.  
  126.      Hammer in the West hallow and hold this holy-stead!

  128.  Returning to the north, direct your attention overhead, there send and
  129. sign the hammer on the "ceiling" of the sphere directly above you,
  130. saying:
  131.  
  132.      Hammer over me hallow and hold this holy-stead!
  133.  
  134.  And then project the hammer sign below the "floor" of the sphere (not
  135. the ground or room floor) directly beneat you and intone:
  136.  
  137.      Hammer under me hallow and hold this holy-stead!
  138.  
  139.  f)  Now, strike the cross STADHA again and vibrate:
  140.  
  141.      Hammer hallow and hold this holy-stead!
  142.  
  143.  Turning in the center of the VE, repeat this once for each of the other
  144. four directions and once for the vertical axis.  The visual effect
  145. should be one of axes connecting all six shinning red hammers to your
  146. personal center, all engulfed by a field of sparkling deep blue light
  147. and surrounded by a band of bright red runes.
  148.  
  149.  g)  Finnally, center all the forces of the VE by folding your arms from
  150. the cross STADHA in toward your center, with your fingertips touching at
  151. the solar plexus, and saying:
  152.  
  153.      Around me and in me Asgardhr and Midhgardhr!
  154.  
  155.  
  156.  5.  If the energy built up by the entire operation is to be
  157. internalized, then draw the collected energies into your personal center
  158. by standing in the cross position, and while deeply inhaling, draw your
  159. arms in so that your fingertips touch your solar plexus.  Turn in all
  160. four directions and repeat this action, each time visualizing the sphere
  161. being drawn into your center.  If the energy of the rite has been sent
  162. abroad, then you may simply split the sphere with your hand or knife and
  163. step out of the circle. More complex rituals can be worked into this more
  164. simple pattern. This is mainly a ritual for centering and banishing.
